What an expander does
A palatal expander is an orthodontic appliance used to increase the width of the upper jaw when an orthodontist identifies a true width discrepancy.
It may be recommended for a posterior crossbite, a narrow upper jaw, certain eruption concerns, or crowding connected to limited upper arch width.
What to expect
An expander applies gentle, gradual forces. Once the desired width is reached, it is generally kept in place for a period of stabilization.
Its primary job is to improve the width and relationship of the upper jaw. Braces or aligners may later be used to align individual teeth when appropriate.
A careful diagnosis comes first
