What is Phase 1 treatment?
Phase 1, also called early or interceptive orthodontic treatment, takes place while a child still has some baby teeth and is still growing.
Its purpose is not simply to put braces on a child sooner. In selected cases, it can help address a developing concern while growth and tooth development make certain corrections easier.
Why might it be recommended?
Early treatment may be used to correct a crossbite, widen a narrow upper jaw, guide a permanent tooth into a better path of eruption, manage space after premature tooth loss, or address certain developing jaw relationships.
The recommendation depends on your child’s specific diagnosis. Many children do not need Phase 1 treatment and are best treated later with one comprehensive phase.
What happens after Phase 1?
Some children who complete Phase 1 treatment later need a second phase once their permanent teeth have erupted. The first phase focuses on the developing concern. A later phase, when needed, focuses on aligning permanent teeth and establishing a functional bite.
