Does my child need to see an orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an orthodontic evaluation no later than age 7. That does not mean every seven-year-old needs braces. Most children evaluated at this age do not begin treatment right away.
An early examination helps us understand how your child’s teeth and jaws are developing, and whether the best plan is treatment now, treatment later, or simply observation.
Signs it may be time for an evaluation
A consultation can be helpful when you notice crowded or overlapping teeth, teeth erupting in an unusual position, early or late loss of baby teeth, difficulty biting or chewing, a crossbite, underbite, prominent overbite, protruding upper teeth, or spacing.
Other reasons include teeth that seem blocked from erupting, a jaw that shifts when your child bites, persistent thumb or finger sucking, mouth breathing, facial or jaw asymmetry, or clicking or shifting at the jaw.
Why age 7 matters
Around age 7, children typically have a mix of baby and permanent teeth. This gives an orthodontist an early view of jaw relationships and how permanent teeth are developing.
For some children, monitoring growth is the right recommendation. For others, addressing a narrow upper jaw, crossbite, or eruption concern while a child is growing may be useful. The goal is not to start treatment early. It is to choose the right timing for your child.
Frequently asked questions
Will my child need braces at age 7?
Not necessarily. An evaluation is a chance to understand development and timing. Many children are simply monitored until treatment is more appropriate.
Do I need to wait for a dentist referral?
No. You can schedule a complimentary consultation directly with Caruso Orthodontics whenever you have a concern or your child is approaching age 7.
